9 Simple reasons to own your domain

http://nfvesta.googlepages.com/domain.bmp

9 Simple reasons to own a domain instead of a Sub domain

1. First and foremost reason, it gives a professional to your blog/site, if you own a domain

2. Most of the times, sub domain are ignored by search engines to be listed in their search results,

3. Subdomains are subjected to follow certain rules and regulation, in some cases show compulsory link to their main site

4. Sub domain are not registered on you, You are no more than a tenant, Sub domains are registered on their respective owner, whereas if you own a domain your are the real boss

5. Subdomain url's are hard to remember with those slashes, dots, hyphens, numbers etc
example- Http://.123-mysite.free-site.com/
In the other hand if own a domain url's are based on your name or company so its easy to remember

6. Subdomains like blogger, wordpress and other free platforms does not support PHP, MYSQL database, ASP etc, In the other hand domains PHP, MYSQL database,ASP and lot more are supported

7. In sub domains like Blogger,Wordpress, or any other free platforms do not support file hosting of word,PDF,.exe files on to their server. In domains you are allowed to upload and host many files on to their servers

8. Sub domains(expect wordpress) do not have multiple pages like http://You.subdomain.com/contact. In other hand in domains, you can have a number of multiple pages

9. Moreover sub domains you do not have email address support, like you@yoursite.subdomain.com, whereas in domain you have a support for email address like you@yourdomain.com

There are a lot more advantages of a domain than a subdomain. No one can deny it. If you ask me, I would prefer domain instead of a subdomain. I would strongly recommend hosting your domain at Top Hosting Center , an award winning, affordable, reliable, secure domain host provider

The apple effect - Wow!

Recently I had a chance to experiment 2 gig 2nd generation iPod nano, which was bought to college by my friend called Rohit. I was attracted by its simple, sleek design and of course the quality of the product. I could have easily settled for so many cheaper varieties of media players available in the market but thought there is difference between ‘riding a toyota corolla vs Benz’. It’s really amazing how engineers at Apple managed to squeeze flash memory, a processor(or better SOC) and Lithium ion battery in that slim case. More importantly, Apple provides a host of services to its customer: extended product/battery protection plan, number of accessories for the product, songs (in protected AAC(Advanced Audio Coding) format) for 99 c per song from its iTunes store.Every product of Apple has its own distinctive features that regalises it.May it be iMacs, iPods or softwares developed by the computer.

Firefox hack

Generally I prefer to switch to different browser every once in a while. It may be that I am browser-maniac or it may be just to avoid monotony of using the same browser. As a Blogger, I remain hooked on to the Internet most of the time. Though I use Firefox,Opera, Mozilla(in the order of usage), I have to test Web Applications in Internet Explorer as majority of users still rely on it despite of its limitations and security loop-holes. One thing which excites me is the possibility of playing around with configuration settings of Firefox and Mozilla. The so-called “hacks”
lets us tweak the browser performance and get the maximum in terms of performance, security and of course ;-) a bit of thrill. The following browser tweaks I found in a tech column in PC Magazine and is expected to speed-up the loading of pages.
1)Open up the configuration variables by typing “about:config” in the address bar and pressing “Enter”.
2) Search for “network .http.pipelining” and set it to “true”.
3) Search for “network.http.proxy.pipelining” and set it to “true”.
4) Search for “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” and increase it to value like “20 “.
Basically, these changes allow the browser to make multiple page requests at the same time.

Beware! software cracks may be dangerous!

Most of the cracks available for softwares inject either spywares or trojans into the computer when they are run.Few days back, I tried out a crack for a file-transfer application and while using the machine an alert pops up informing that there are so many critical errors in the machine and that I must download certain patch from a fishy-like website. It’s annoying to see the distracting message showing up every once in a while while I am browsing. Only remedy should be to clean up the registry.....

Tips for defensive Web Designing

Recently, I perused a book titled “Defensive design for the Web” by 37signals.com.It contains a number of useful guidelines for Web Designing followed by illustrative examples. Some of the

notable points are listed below:

About Error Messages
1)Error messages should be distinctly noticeable.
2)Color, Icons, Text should be used to highlight/explain problem area.
3)Error identification should be consistent throughout the system.
4) Need for back and forth clicking in error pages be eliminated.
5) Custom “404-Page not found ” pages should include following information:
a) company’s name and logo.
b) reason for displaying that page.
c) links back to home/other pages.
d) search engine.
e) email links so that problem can be reported.

About Web forms
5) Required fields should be highlighted in the form.
6) Sample entries, drop-downs, formatting hints should be provided.
7) Entries should be validated ASAP both at the client and the server.
8) Use of “Reset” or “Clear” button be discouraged and the “Submit” button be disabled after it is clicked to avoid multiple form submissions.
9) Entries made in the form needs to be saved periodically
to handle premature drop-outs.

About URL redirection
10) Near-miss URLs should be successfully redirected using sub-domain wild cards(*) etc.
e.g. addresses like www3.abc.com or www2.abc.com can be directed to abc.com.

Use of HTML ALT tags for images
11)As usual, ALT tags should contain concise but precise description of the images being used so that users withslow Internet connection or with text-only browsers may use it without hindrance. Moreover, it aids Search Engine Crawlers to grant high ranking to thepage.
